Responsibly harvested, urban lumber made into fresh, modern furnishings, lighting, home accents and more!

In 2010, Rob and Zoe had a dream:  to design and build a coffee table for their own living room from the most eco-friendly, renewably resourced, responsible wood they could find. They studied pallet furniture, bamboo furniture, reclaimed barn wood, etc., but none had the uniqueness and beauty they hoped for. Then they stumbled upon the term 'Urban Lumber'. A whole world of possibilities opened up for them! They began collecting books about local trees, learned the science behind milling and drying wood, and started small--right in their backyard with a few local logs provided by an arborist friend...They looked for advice from other woodworkers all over the country, and began sharing pictures and sending stock to various woodworkers and artists. Word got around, Rob & Zoe's wood pile grew, and by late 2010 they found themselves running a full-time business supplying lumber and turning stock from trees that were otherwise going to be destroyed.  Florida's tropical climate paired with St. Petersburg's urban environment rich in cultural diversity and landscaping provides FUNKTIONHOUSE with a never-ending selection of exotic and standard hardwoods and fruit & nut woods, along with new and rare species you'll love exploring.  They collect the trees, mill the lumber, dry slabs in a specialized box kiln, and design and build one-of-a-kind furnishings from start to finish, ensuring quality and craftsmanship in every piece.
